Online maps are not fully stored on the device but are downloaded via the Internet as each area is viewed.
The downloaded tiles are stored on the device (computer or smartphone), so if you revisit that area, they do not need to be downloaded again. This function is called cache, and it has a memory limit. When this limit is exceeded, the oldest tiles will be overwritten.
Types of Online Maps
Land and the TwoNav App offer various online maps. These maps can be classified according to different criteria:
-
Coverage Area: They may cover the entire world, a specific country, or a particular area.
-
Topo/Ortho: There are topographic maps, orthophotos (aerial images), and even urban maps like Google Maps.
-
Free or Paid: All maps are free except for Géoportail (IGN France).
-
With or Without Transparency: Some maps display specific information (e.g., trails) but leave the rest of the surface transparent so that you can see the background map below. This is the case with OSM_Lonvia Hiking and Cycling layers, which show marked trails for hiking and cycling, such as the red/white GR trail markers.
Available Maps
Access to online maps is done through the data tree. To open a map, simply double-click on the one you wish to use.
Below is a list of folders where online maps can be found in the data tree. Each country offers different resources in terms of online maps. Explore the contents of each folder to find the available maps. Generally, maps are free, except in France, where the IGN Géoportail service is paid and requires purchasing the TwoNav Géoportail product.
Worldwide Coverage Maps
In the 'World' section, you will find maps that cover the entire world, including different types:
-
Aerial Imagery: Aerial_ESRI_ArcGIS is a worldwide orthophoto.
-
OpenStreetMap Maps: Various versions of OSM data.
-
Lonvia Layers: Trail overlays relevant for hiking, biking, or skiing. These are transparent, allowing information from the underlying map to be seen.
-
World_Base_Map/World_Base_Relief: Default map and relief layers. These are automatically downloaded initially and are always available under 'Stored Maps'.
-
Others: This list is continuously updated with new resources for TwoNav users.
Maps Plus
Maps Plus are high-quality maps hosted on an external server to Land. They are fast and reliable. The data consists of different versions of OpenStreetMap, emphasizing various types of information based on usage. They can be found in the folder "Online Maps > Maps Plus" and require a TwoNav subscription to be used.
