Online maps are not stored completely in the device; instead, they are downloaded from the internet as you check the various areas.
The downloaded cells are stored on the device (computer or smartphone), so if you revisit that area, the cells won’t have to be downloaded again. This feature is called “caching”, and is limited by the amount of memory it can occupy (adjustable). When this limit is exceeded, the oldest cells will be overwritten.
Land and the TwoNav app offer several online maps. These maps can be classified based on various criteria:
- Coverage area: they can span the entire world, one country or a specific area.
- Topo/Ortho: there are topographic and orthophoto (aerial images) maps, and even Google-type urban maps.
- Freeware or payware: all the maps are free except those in the French IGN geo-portal.
- See-through or not: some maps display certain information (e.g. paths) but leave the remaining surface transparent so you can see the background that is loaded underneath. Such is the case of Lonvia Hiking and Cycling maps, which show the paths you’ll see marked during your hiking and cycling outings. For example, the red/white marks on GR paths.
Available Maps
This is the list of folders where we can find online maps in the data tree.
Maps by Country
Each country offers different resources in terms of online maps. Explore the contents of each folder that interests you to find the available maps.
Generally, the maps are free, except in the case of France, where the IGN Géoportail service is paid and requires the purchase of the product TwoNav Géoportail.
Worldwide Coverage Maps
In the 'World' section, we will find maps that cover the entire world, of different types:
- Aerial Image: Aerial_ESRI_ArcGIS is a worldwide coverage orthophoto.
- OpenStreetMap Maps: Different versions of OSM data.
- Lonvia Layers: Tracks of relevant paths for hiking, biking, or skiing. They are transparent so that information from the map below can also be seen.
- World_Base_Map/World_Base_Relief: Default map and relief. They are downloaded automatically from the start, so they are always in 'Stored Maps' as well.
- Others: This list is constantly changing and growing according to the resources we find to offer to TwoNav users.
Plus Maps
Plus maps are hosted on a high-quality server that provides fast and reliable service.
The data consists of different elaborations of Open Street Map, highlighting different information depending on the intended use.
They are located in the MapsPlus folder and require a Premium or Pro subscription to work.
How to Open Them
Access to Online maps in Land is done from the data tree.
Additionally, Land offers the possibility to capture sections of the online map to create local maps that can be loaded onto a GPS device that does not have Internet (+info).
In the TwoNav App, access to online maps is in the map list.
Both in Land and TwoNav, when accessing an online map from the 'Maps online' list, a reference file is downloaded that manages the connection. This file is saved in 'Stored Maps' and can be opened like any other map. It is not necessary to go to 'Maps online' and download it again each time.
