It’s quite common to want to explore a new area and not be sure which route is best for getting to know the place. In these cases, we recommend using the most popular online route platforms to get inspired and find routes from all over the world and for multiple sports that other enthusiasts have shared.
The vast majority of routes include directions along the way and highlight key points of the location. These are reference routes that will be very useful for exploring the area safely and with the experience of other users who have traveled them before. There are many platforms, but today we will show you how to explore online routes on what we consider the best platforms.
KOMOOT
It’s one of the richest platforms in routes across Europe. To use it, you must go to their website and log in as a user.
Search for routes on Komoot
Once registered, in the 'Routes' section, enter the area you want to explore in the search bar, for example 'Volcanoes of Olot.'
Next, a list of routes for this area will appear. From here, we can filter the results using filters (sport, distance, elevation, etc.) until we find the most suitable route. Once we have it, we’ll save it to add it to our Komoot user profile.
Tip: Save several routes from the area; later, in Land, we can open them to compare or create our own custom route from the chosen routes.
Link your Komoot account with TwoNav
To access the routes you have saved in Land and the TwoNav App, you must link your Komoot account with TwoNav. This article explains how to do it.
LINK THIRD-PARTY ACCOUNTS WITH TWONAV
Access your routes from Land
Thanks to the direct connection with Komoot, we’ll have easy and convenient access to the routes we have saved in our account from Land. To access them, in the data tree, click 'Routes > My online routes > Komoot'.
Tip: You can also access your Komoot routes from the TwoNav App by clicking 'Routes > My online routes > Komoot'.
WIKILOC
This is another of the most popular platforms, especially in southern Europe, where you can find countless routes from all over the world.
Search for routes on Wikiloc
Zoom in on the map in the area where you’ll be going on your excursion. Then, select the 'Tools > Find a Route on Wikiloc' function.
Land will open the Wikiloc website with the map centered in the same area we had in Land and will show us routes for that place. From here, you can filter the results using filters (sport, distance, elevation, etc.) until you find the most suitable route for you. The Wikiloc website does not require registration to search for routes, but it does require it to download the route. If you don’t have a user account, create one.
When downloading the routes, it’s recommended to activate the options 'Download original track' and 'Include locations displayed on the map', so you’ll have a route full of information that you can later edit in Land by adding or removing the information that interests you most.
Open the route in Land
TwoNav does not have a direct connection with this platform, so we will need to download the file to our computer and then open the route in Land.
Tip: When opening the route, remember to move it to the folder synced with TwoNav Cloud. Right-click on the route and select 'File > Save in Data folder'. This way, your route will be automatically uploaded to your TwoNav Cloud.
OTHER PLATFORMS
Besides Komoot and Wikiloc, there are other powerful platforms like Utagawavtt, OpenRunner, FFCT, or IGN Rando. All these platforms have a direct connection with TwoNav products. You can search for new routes both from their websites and from Land and the TwoNav App.
To access the routes these platforms offer, zoom in on the map in the area where you want to search and click:
-
Land: 'Data tree > Routes > Discover online routes'
- TwoNav App: 'Main menu > Routes > More options > Discover online routes'
Compare the route layout and the most important data of the suggested routes and download those that interest you the most.
EDIT AND ENHANCE THE ROUTE
Once you have the route that best fits the trip you want to make, it’s important to enhance it with more information and assess if it’s necessary to modify the layout.
If you want to edit the route and go through places you have been recommended, modify its layout; you can lengthen, shorten, or add variants according to your needs.
The route you downloaded will most likely contain directions along the track. In case the route does not contain this information or it’s lacking, enhance the track with roadbook points with comments, maneuvers, and photos. So when navigating it, a TwoNav GPS or the TwoNav App will alert you to events and key points along the route.
IF YOU PREFER, CREATE YOUR ROUTE FROM SCRATCH
If you can’t find routes for the area you want to visit or the ones you find don’t quite convince you, with Land you can also create a route from scratch to your liking. Draw it point by point or in a few clicks with the 'FastTrack' tool.
TASKS
Now that you know how to explore online routes, we suggest several exercises to put it into practice.
- Choose a place for your next adventure and check the different providers until you find the route you want. Once downloaded, edit its layout and add several roadbook points
- Dare to create a route from scratch. Inspect the paths you see on the map and create a route manually using the different tools that Land offers for route creation.
