TwoNav's pointer is designed to indicate the current orientation of the device, so that it can be seen which part of the map we are facing.
This pointer orientation, or bearing, can be determined in 3 ways, using the 'System > Compass > Take bearing from' option:
- GPS: Direction from the previous position to the current one. This system is not reliable when stopped.
- Compass: Use the device's electronic compass.
- Automatic: Uses the compass at low speeds (<5km/h), but the GPS at higher speeds.
The electronic compass is sensitive to electromagnetic fields, so it can be affected by the proximity of metals or electrical devices.
Recommendations to achieve the best reliability of heading data:
- For vehicle sports (bike, motorbike, car) it is usually more reliable to use the 'GPS' heading option, since there are frequent electromagnetic fields due to motors, batteries, metals or other electronic devices.
- If using the electronic compass, it is recommended to periodically calibrate the compass (Settings > System > Compass).
