Land offers multiple tools to modify the path of a track and precisely adjust it to the route you want. You can move points, add or replace entire sections, ensuring your final track exactly reflects the itinerary you want to follow.
In this article, we will see step by step how to access edit mode and how to apply the main modification and editing tools to the track routes.
Enter edit mode
Before modifying a track, you must enter edit mode. This mode activates the Track Editor, a specific toolbar with tools to add, move, or delete points on the route.
You can access edit mode in the following ways:
-
From the toolbar: click on Track Editor.
-
From the track itself: right-click on the track (in the data tree or on the map) and select Edit > Edit on map.
When entering edit mode, the Track Editor will be displayed with all the available tools to work on the path.
Tip: If the Track Editor toolbar appears disabled (icons in gray), it means that no track is selected.
Select a track to edit
If you have several tracks open in Land, the track that will be edited is always the one that is selected. This allows you to modify multiple tracks without closing the Track Editor, switching between them as needed.
You can select a track in two ways:
- From the data tree: click on the name of the track you want to edit.
-
From the map: activate the Selection tool and click directly on the track.
Once selected, the track will appear highlighted and you can begin applying any editing tool.
Tip: If when trying to edit a track the tools in the Track Editor remain gray, make sure you have selected an active track.
Move track points
One of the simplest ways to modify a track is to adjust the position of its points. This allows you to correct small deviations or precisely adapt the route to the map.
- Click on the point you want to move and drag it to the new position on the map.
You can have any tool activated while moving points (add points, delete points, etc.), but we recommend having the 'Selection' tool activated to avoid unintentional actions when dragging points.
Tip: If moving a point unexpectedly alters the shape of the track, use the Undo tool or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Z to revert to the previous step. If you want to recover an action you have undone, use Ctrl+Y to redo it.
Add intermediate points
You can insert new points between existing ones to adjust the track path with greater precision.
-
With the Add intermediate points tool
This tool allows you to add points without needing to select a starting point beforehand. Land will automatically detect the closest point and use it as a reference. It is a quick and convenient method, although it may limit the direction in which new points are inserted if another point is closer.
For more information about this and other editor functions, see the article Track editing tools. -
With the Add points tool
This method offers more control, as you can precisely define from which point you want to continue the path. Points can be added in any direction since the reference point is fixed.
Step by step:- Select the initial point from which you want to add new points using the Selection tool.
Tip: You can also select a point with a double click. - Activate the Add points tool.
- Create the new points on the map following the desired route.
- Select the initial point from which you want to add new points using the Selection tool.
Add points at the start or end of the track
You can also extend a track from its ends by adding new points at the beginning or end of the route.
- Select the start or end point of the track with the Selection tool.
- Select the Add points tool.
- Create the new points on the map as usual.
Note: Points created from the starting point will be added “backwards”, extending the track from that end.
Modify the path by drawing
The Draw track tool allows you to redefine a part of the route by replacing it with a new section drawn directly on the map. It is especially useful to correct incorrect segments or adjust the track to more precise paths.
- Activate the Draw track tool.
- Hold down the left mouse button on the point where the section you want to modify begins.
- Draw the new section on the map until it connects with a later point on the track.
- When you release the mouse, the new section will be added to the track, automatically deleting the previous segment.
Tip: If the result is not as expected, use the Undo tool or the shortcut Ctrl+Z to revert to the previous state. If you want to recover an action you have undone, use Ctrl+Y to redo it.
Undo actions
During track editing it is common to make mistakes, such as adding a point in the wrong place or drawing a section imprecisely. The quickest way to fix this is by using the Undo tool.
Each time you press Undo, the last action performed will be removed. You can repeat this several times to step back gradually until you recover the desired state.
Tip: You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Z to quickly execute Undo.
For more information on how to delete specific points from the path, see the article Delete track points.
Finish and save changes
When you finish editing, click the Finish editing button on the toolbar. This will close edit mode and apply the modifications to the track.
To save the changes:
- Right-click on the track, either in the data tree or directly on the map.
- Select File > Save track.
The file will be updated with all modifications. If you prefer, you can save a copy with a different name using File > Save as... to also keep the original version.
Tip: Before closing Land, make sure to save your changes to avoid losing your edits.
